What is the best camping stove out there? Well, obviously that is going to depend on what your situation is and where & how you intend to use it. Are you looking for a portable camping stove for car camping? Day hiking? Backpack camping? Or Fishing or hunting? Identifying what your intended use will be is the first step in determining the best camping stove for you.

Next, you'll need to consider how many people will be in your party, and how many meals you intend on cooking per outing. A single burner camping stove can be nice due to its compactness but you are considerably limited on how many things can be heated at once. Where as a 2 burner camping stove or even 3 burner camping stove may be the best option for the ultimate cooking ability, these larger, heavier models are less than ideal for backpack camping stoves. The best camping stove is going to be the one that requires the least amount of compromises for your situation.

Best Camping Stove Fuel Sources

Different camping stoves use different fuel sources. Some of them will even work on multiple fuel types. Camping stove fuel sources include Alcohol, Blended Fuel, Butane, Gasoline, Isobutane, Kerosene, Propane, Sterno, White Gas, and even Wood. The best camping stove fuel source boils down to what stove you use, and where you intend to use it. The most common fuels today are Propane, and White Gas. The things to remember are that Propane is a great all around, and easy to get fuel but doesn't perform well at extreme altitude or low temperatures. On the other hand, White Gas is works well at a broader temperature range (including those single digits) and is the best camping stove fuel at higher altitudes, but is not as easy to come by.

Propane Camping Stove

Fuel source should also be a top priority. A propane camping stove is the most common and has its advantages. But even the best propane camping stoves also have their disadvantages.

Advantage #1: fuel is easy to come by and relatively inexpensive. Portable propane tanks are often available at even the smallest mom & pop stores even in the middle of nowhere. This becomes especially important when you find yourself 100 miles out in the boondocks, a carload of hungry children, with a cooler full of hamburger patties, a perfectly good propane camping stove, and suddenly realize that you forgot the fuel canisters back at home.

Disadvantage #1: Though propane is known for producing a hot steady flame and burns clean & efficiently at moderate temperatures and altitude, it is not the best choice for high altitude or extreme cold. So, if you are planning on hiking above 10,000 feet, propane is not going to be the best camping stove for you. Likewise, if the temperatures are going to be down in the single digits, a better option would be camping stove that uses white gas. The best camping stove for high altitude or extreme cold is a white gas camping stove.

Single Burner Camping Stove

The Single burner camping stove comes in various forms from simple propane single burner camping stoves from companies like Coleman, to top-of-the-line white gas or blended fuel camping stoves from companies like MSR, Snowpeak, and Jetboil. The beauty of the single burner camping stove is in its extreme portability. These are the best camping stove for hiking, backpacking, and camping trips where weight and pack-ability is an issue. Some of the extremely lightweight models like the MSR WhisperLite are also great for throwing in a day pack or fishing vest for a hot streamside lunch, afternoon coffee, or tea.

Double Burner Camping Stove

Most double burner camping stove models are either powered by propane or white gas (Coleman Fuel). The propane models are quick and convenient and usually come with their own built-in starter. Coleman calls there's "InstaStart", where as Century refers to it as "Matchless". The double burner camping stove gives you more cooking space with the additional burner over the single burner type, but comes with the addition of extra weight and size. The double burner camping stove is the best camping stove for the campsite, the tailgate, or the picnic table. Due to their additional size they are not the best option for hiking or back packing. Double burner camping stoves are available from manufacturers like Coleman, Texsport, Primus, Century, Stansport, and Brunton.

3 Burner Camping Stove

Unfortunately a 3 burner camping stove is harder to come by than a single burner or double burner camping stove. Quite frankly, not many manufacturers make them. What they do market as a 3 Burner Camping Stove is usually a bit of a misnomer, sort of. For example, Camp Chef currently sells what they call their Denali 3 Burner Camping Stove that is really 2 traditional 12,000 BTU burners with a 5,000 BTU Grill in between the 2 burners. Admittedly, the Denali is probably the best camping stove in the 3 Burner class, and the griddle is a nice feature, but is it really a 3 Burner Camping Stove?

If more than 2 burners are what you're looking for, the best solution for many is to use multiple stoves. This obviously wouldn't be feasible for the lightweight backpacker, but for car camping or base camping, where a little additional weight and size can be compromised for convenience, it is certainly worth considering.

Backpack Camping Stoves

Backpack camping stoves are the best camping stove solution for the hardcore hiker that measures pack weight down to the ounce. There are a plethora of great backpack camping stoves available today, and many are very reasonably priced. The big companies in the backpack camping stove industry consist of MSR, Snowpeak, Brunton, Jetboil, and Primus. Though these powerful little stoves are designed for the serious backpacker, considering their economical price, they are also great solutions for a streamside hot lunch, a backup stove for the camp site, or even that 3rd burner for the Double Burner camping stove.

Remember, the best camping stove is going to be the one that closest meets your intended use, and you budget.
